A V-ring consists of a seal body († fig. 2a), a flexible, conical-shaped sealing lip († fig. 2b) and an integral, resilient "hinge" († fig. 2c). It is stretched and installed directly on the shaft, where it is held in place by the inherent tension of the seal body. It rotates with the shaft and seals axially against a stationary counterface.

V-ring seals are mounted on shafts and their thin, tapered lip seals against a surface (counterface) at right angles to the shaft. No special demands are placed on the surface finish of the shaft seating and the V-rings act as flingers, since they have an interference fit on the shaft and rotate with it.
